Policies
I don't accept many book illustration commissions at this time due to the time required (I stay very busy with caricature-related work.), but I am happy to discuss new projects. I only work with authors who allow for a certain amount of illustrator creativity and do not expect images to be exactly as they appear in their own heads.
If the author chooses traditional work, I will do my best to ensure that the work meets the author's expectation by sending a pencil sketch prior to inking (and/or coloring) in order to get author feedback. Once that feedback (if any) is received, I will incorporate it and move on to completion of the image. I do not send multiple pencil sketches, but I will send the first one along.
If the author has selected digital images, more changes can be offered, however there will an additional charge if the changes become excessive. Please understand that I will try to work with your vision as closely as possible, but part of the creative process is working together and trusting your illustrator. I have turned down projects upon seeing that the author has already created a story board with details down to exact posters on the main character's bedroom wall and every square inch of the room described in painstaking detail.
I always begin by commissioning the very first image to ensure that the author is satisfied with the style and vision of the work. I will pass along a high-resolution copy of the image, whether that is a digital image or of a traditional image. This copy's resolution is more than high enough to be used for publication on its own, therefore I do not mail originals of traditional artwork (without a separate fee for shipping and handling, including the cost of shipping certified).
Other restrictions may apply, but please know that it is not my intention to push any author away with excessive restrictions; however, I have experienced some less-than-desirable outcomes necessitating these policies.
Also, I do require credit as the illustrator for all works. Once we have completed the project, the author retains rights to the images. I do require access to two images for portfolio and advertising purposes.
